Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience with harness racing?
No. Fractional ownership is designed to welcome both new and experienced owners. We will explain the process and help you understand what to expect.
What does 1% ownership mean?
A 1% owner holds a 1% interest in the horse, shares applicable expenses at the published 1% rate and receives 1% of distributable net purse and sale proceeds.
How is the one-time purchase price calculated?
Multiply the horse’s listed value by the percentage purchased. For a $12,000 horse, 1% equals $120, 5% equals $600 and 10% equals $1,200.
When do monthly fees begin?
The ownership agreement will state the effective date. Monthly fees are based on the horse’s applicable phase during the billing period.
Can the monthly rate change?
Yes. The rate changes when the horse moves between turnout, training and training/racing. Base rates may also change or vary by trainer.
What expenses are not included?
Transportation, staking, nomination, sustaining and entry fees, extraordinary veterinary expenses, and other horse-specific costs identified in the ownership agreement are billed separately.
How are horse purse proceeds distributed?
After applicable trainer and driver percentages, remaining net purse proceeds are distributed according to percentage ownership.
What happens if the horse is sold?
Net sale proceeds, after commissions and sale-related fees, are distributed according to percentage ownership.
Can I sell or transfer my ownership share?
Any transfer or sale must follow the ownership agreement and applicable racing or registration
requirements.
Who makes decisions about the horse?
The designated manager and trainer make ordinary training, racing and care decisions, subject to the authority and procedures described in the ownership agreement.
Can I visit or attend races?
Owner participation is encouraged when practical and permitted by the trainer, farm and racing facility. Visits should be arranged in advance.
What happens if the horse is injured or retired?
Horse welfare comes first. Veterinary, rehabilitation, retirement or other decisions will be made under the ownership agreement with appropriate professional input.
